PCTPA works with various jurisdictions and agencies on rail planning and programming efforts which involve current rail services as well as planning studies for future rail improvements.

Capitol Corridor

The current Capitol Corridor train schedule includes one round trip daily to/from Auburn.  For schedule information, visit the Capitol Corridor website.

PCTPA is a member of the Capitol Corridor Joint Powers Authority (CCJPA), a consortium of transportation agencies that manage the Capitol Corridors rail service between San Jose and Auburn. The service is operated by Amtrak. The service in Placer County also includes connector bus service from Reno/Sparks to Sacramento, stopping in Truckee, Colfax, Auburn, Rocklin, and Roseville.

Current Rail Projects and Planning

Sacramento-Roseville Third Track Project

CCJPA, along with partner agencies, is working on adding a third main track between Sacramento to Roseville with the long term goal of increasing the number of round trips per day from the current one to ten. Phase 1 of the project would increase the number of round trips to three and is currently seeking funding for construction. Learn more about the project here!

Reno-Auburn Rail Extension Feasibility Study

In 2023, Caltrans completed a Project Study Report (PSR) that studied the feasibility of expanded passenger rail service to Reno and outlined necessary station improvements. This was supplemented by a First/Last Mile Analysis Report prepared by PCTPA that looked at current and future first/last mile connection needs at seven station sites along the corridor. Planning for expanded passenger rail service to Reno continues with CCJPA and partner agencies along the I-80 corridor in Placer, Nevada, and Washoe Counties.
